Travel Tips When Visiting Cyprus

Kanika Hotels, Travel Tips - October 24, 2017

Cyprus saw 3.1 million tourists visiting the island in the 2016. You don’t really need much convincing why Cyprus is the perfect destination for you. Apart from the breathtaking views, rich in history, safety and gastronomy, Cyprus has so much to offer.

An island where the goddess of love and passion was born, Aphrodite is just one of many activities you can do when you arrive. We would like to share with you a few tips for your next visit to the island.

If you are staying in Limassol, Paphos or Ayia Napa we recommend you hire a car to be able to drive around the country. There is a complimentary publication Authentic Cyprus which you can get for free at any tourist office. It describes 15 car journeys in great detail and the passenger doesn’t have to be a skilled navigator.

The first thing you should buy is a local SIM card. You can buy a SOEASY card by a local network company, CYTA. You can find this sim cards everywhere, at the airport, mini markets or small kiosks. It will cost you €5 and you will be able to use Google Maps, your social networks and stay in touch with your family and friends. It will be much cheaper for you to use rather using your local provider.

If you are a last minute person and don’t want to book a taxi in advance, you can always find taxi drivers at Larnaka Airport or Paphos Airport. We suggest you book your taxi driver by contacting your hotel in advance so you have a peace of mind.

The currency in Cyprus is Euro, you can change your currency in your country or when you arrive to Cyprus at any bank or exchange office.

We suggest going out of your “comfort zone” and exploring this island rather than sticking to the popular tourist towns such as Pafos and Agia Napa. If you hired a car, drive to the mountains, explore the island. If you don’t rent a car for €2 (£1.60) you can buy a bus day ticket. Master the time tables, and enjoy. If you’re in the harbour and need a coffee, the Hospice shop will not disappoint.

Speaking of comfort zones, how about hiring a jeep and exploring remote parts of the island like the Akamas Peninsula? Make sure the jeep has air-conditioning because you will need it. Do something different by learning a new skill whilst you are here. You can try diving, rock-climbing, water-skiing or paragliding.

You can try mountain biking as well and if it sounds daunting, we’ve heard of one company that operates an “uplift service”. They drop you off at a high point which means all you have to do is point the boke downhill and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Our team members at all our hotels will be able to help you book anything you like.

If you decide that you want to stay at one of Kanika’s Hotels and Resorts and all you want to do is swim and enjoy the breath-taking views that’s absolutely fine. We have plenty of activities at our hotels and resorts that you will enjoy.

There you have it, plenty of activities to do while you visit this beautiful island. In the meantime, you can like our Facebook Fan page or our Instagram Page and follow us for updates and inspiration.

If you enjoyed this article, you can share it with your friends so they get inspired.

Why Cyprus Food Is Simply The Best

Gastronomy, Kanika Hotels - August 4, 2017

Greek Cypriot food we believe is one of the best, not because we live here but because the world says it is. The Cypriot cuisine is an exotic blend of Greek and Middle Eastern cultures, sprinkled with remnants of ancient civilisations such as indigenous Roman root vegetables or old Phoenician delicacies. We all know that the “Mediterranean diet” is considered one of the healthiest diets on the planet. Due to Cypriot climate it gives freshness to food, that’s why our food has an intense flavour.

If you are planning your wedding in Cyprus, you will not be disappointed with our dishes here at Kanika Hotels & Resorts. Food is more than just food, it’s an entire culture, renowned culinary historian Massimo Montanari once suggested. “Many people no travel not just to savour the country, luxury hotel or the beautiful weather, but also to take home memories of exceptional food experiences”, reveals Group Executive Chef Antonis Nicolaou. “In order to achieve this goal, our food philosophy allows us to offer high standards, discover new, inventive ideas, and to constantly update techniques and authentic ingredients.”. Thus, with passion and determination, the Committee, 250 Kanika Chefs and UK Consultant Executive Chef Peter Gorton (TV Celebrity chef and former holder of a Michelin Star) discuss, explore and travel the globe – on a tireless search for new local flavours and recipes to offer Kanika guests the ultimate in World Inclusive Dinning. You can check out more about that here.

When you try our food you will be astonished from the taste and the feeling that you will have once you try different dishes. You might be wondering what traditional foods are there. The most popular one is Meze; a traditional selection of hot and cold appetizers, meze is basically Cyprus’s equivalent to tapas. A meze platter could include Mediterranean specialities like Tzatziki – a yogurt dip made with garlic, cucumber, and olive oil. Tahini is a paste of crushed sesame seeds, olive oil, lemon and garlic. Tarmosalata is a type of fish roe mixed with pureed potatoes, olive oil, lemon juice and onions. Hummus is a traditional pureed chickpea and tahini dip and Haloumi which is grilled and spiced soft goat or sheep’s cheese.

Kebabs; a selection of homemade deliciously prepared kebabs is very traditional in Cyprus. It’s mostly chunks of meat; chicken, lamb, pork and fish it’s cooked on a skewer and seasons with olive oil, oregano and lemon. They are usually server with tzatziki and delicious pita bread.

Souvlaki or “souvla’’ as Cypriots call it, is thin sliced meat pieces – traditionally lamb, pork, chicken and sometimes beef. It’s served with pitta break and picked salad, hummus and tzatziki.

Koupepia are appetizers and Greek delicacies showcased minced meat and white rice daintily wrapped in steamed grape leaves.

There you have it from health to intense flavour foods. Your wedding and your visit to Cyprus will be one of the best experiences that you will ever have.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to comment or email us anytime.

People say that in Cyprus the sun is always shining brightly, and when we say always, we mean 300 days per year. For us, when it rains it’s a huge surprise – basically the exact opposite of the UK. Cyprus’ sun is magical all year round, but it’s not just the sun, there are many advantages which explain why Cyprus is the perfect destination for your wedding; Mediterranean Sea breezes, culture, ancient history, safety, food, sightseeing and the know-how and experience of wedding planners at Kanika Hotels & Resorts.

Locals are always friendly and very welcoming – as a culture Greek Cypriots are kind and always polite. Greek Cypriots are very family oriented, their family is everything to them. They treat every person who comes to this island like it’s their own family. If you travel around the island and you get lost, don’t worry about not finding your way back to the hotel, you will always find somebody who will help you out. Your guests can enjoy this beautiful island and you don’t have to worry about anything.

Cyprus is officially the safest country in the world according to ValuePenguin research. Out of 106 countries that generate enough data to run a study about the safest countries in the world, Cyprus proudly holds the 5th place globally. Another fact is that Cyprus is the No 1 safest place to live and visit among countries that have a population of under 5 million. The reason why it’s the safest country is because of its culture. People are so friendly; you will be amazed. When booking your wedding you must consider safety for you and your guests.

How To Choose Your Wedding Venue

Kanika Hotels, Weddings - July 5, 2017

The day he proposed has come and gone, you are excited about your new future together with the man you love and so the search for the perfect venue begins.  You are looking for the ideal place to organize your magical wedding. It’s a day that you’ve dreamed about since you were a little girl and now your dream is becoming a reality. Here at Kanika Hotels, we are always excited to see newbrides walk down the aisle. Every time Whitney Houston’s song I Will Always Love You starts playing, we have tears of joy, happiness and love in our eyes. It’s simply magnificent to watch a couple in love share their love together.

The first thing you need to think about is your vision for your wedding venue. As Chrystalla Savva, our wedding coordinator at the Alexander The Great Beach Hotel says you have to decide what type of wedding yo                                                                                                                                                           u want first; A private small wedding or a public wedding where you don’t mind some people walking by and being reminded of what true love means. This might be obvious, but look for venues that fit your vision and your aesthetics. You want your wedding to capture your heart and to be one of the most memorable days of your life.

If you are researching your wedding venue online, Chrystalla highly recommends that you visit the venue before booking it. You can fly to Cyprus for a weekend break and stay at one of Kanika Hotels & Resorts. You have to keep in mind your guest list as well. How many guests are you going to invite? This will save you a lot of time when carrying out your wedding venue research in Cyprus. Once you have an approximate number you will invite, consider your guests’ experiences. Ask your wedding coordinator how many people can fit comfortably in your wedding venue.

You can take inspiration from Pinterest and Instagram wedding pictures but you have to stay true to yourself. It’s very important to ask yourselves as a couple what feels right to you aesthetically and design wise. We can all get carried away with Pinterest and think that we like a certain style but it’s not true to our own identity. This will be the best day of your life where you share your eternal love, everything must be you on that day. Everything must be about you on that day. Everything starts with the music playlist at your wedding; is it going to be Celine Dion’s I Will Always Love You and John Legends All of Me or is it going to be Top Gun’s Take My Breath Away on repeat? If it’s going to be all of you then make it your motto.

What about the wedding date? Have a conversation with your partner about the date you want to get married. Wedding dates can be significant because some couples choose the date they met or their parent’s anniversary date. Here at Kanika Hotels we have perfect wedding hotels around Cyprus, The Alexander The Great Beach Hotel in Paphos, Elias Beach Hotel in Limassol, the Olympic Lagoon Resort in Agia Napa and the Olympic Lagoon Resort in Paphos. You can check our availability and see which fits you best. Once you find available dates and book your wedding venue, it will be as if a huge weight has been lifted off your chest. Our experienced wedding coordinators will help you through the process.

Trusting your partner is common sense but what we want to mention is that you need to trust your wedding coordinator as well. It’s a very important aspect because you want your wedding coordinator to deliver on what they promised. Have a conversation with your wedding coordinator over the phone or in person and see if they understand what you truly want.

These are the essential points that we believe you should consider before booking your wedding venue. If you need help or you might have any questions, please comment below and one of our friendly wedding coordinators will answer any questions you might have. If you would like to enquire about wedding venue availability in Cyprus please use this form to contact us.

World Environment Day 2016 (WED)

Let’s all “GO WILD FOR LIFE”!

June 5th … is not just another single day … June 5th is an Annual Event with a history of 42 years.

June 5th 2016 is the 42nd Celebration of World Environment Day (WED) on which day events worldwide are held to encourage awareness and action for the protection of our environment.

WED is the United Nations’ most important day, began in 1974 and has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.

WED serves as the “people’s day” for doing something to take care of the Earth or be an agent of change. That “something” can be focused locally, nationally or globally; it can be an individual or group action involving a team.

Each year’s WED has a different theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern. WED 2016’s theme is the illegal trade in wildlife under the slogan “Go Wild for Life”, which threatens species such as rhinos and tigers with extinction. Wildlife crime also undermines economies and security, especially in developing countries.

Every WED has a different global host country, where the official celebrations take place. WED highlights the environmental challenges facing that country, and supports the effort to address them. This year’s host is Angola, a country seeking to restore its elephant herds, conserve Africa’s biodiversity-rich wildlife, and safeguard the environment as it continues to rebuild after more than a quarter-century of civil war.

More info about the history and all activities related to WED and to 2016 Theme: Go Wild for Life including illegal trade in wildlife: facts and figures, can be found in the following link:
How our Team celebrates WED 2016 at Elias Beach Hotel …

As a symbolic action in our hotel, we have decided to support this movement, by bringing AWARENESS and EDUCATING children, and at the same time spread the word around how WE CARE for the ENVIRONMENT, through an interactive activity organized at our Kids Club; the Little Monster’s.

We have started from the morning by drawing different type of animals, such as elephants, turtles in order to educate children with all different types of wildlife.

As part of our sustainability efforts is to Reduce – Reuse – Recycle, we have then decided to create a big banner by re-using and re-cycling a bed sheet. We started from the morning hours collecting from the beach various materials which we could then use for our creation, such as stones, sand, leaves and shells.

We then moved to the Kids Club where we started drawing and colouring the big banner, consisting of various environmental slogan, animals, trees, sea and shore ,all through the eyes of children.

By the afternoon, we finished our banner and went all together outside to the gardens and the beach area to show our creation to the rest of the world, where all the children together have shouted the WED 2016 theme: “Go Wild for Life”.

April 22nd 2016 is the 46th Celebration of Earth Day, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate and support the movement for Environmental Protection.

It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year. In 1970, the year of the first Earth Day, the movement gave voice to an emerging consciousness, channeling human energy towards environmental issues. 46 years later, more than 193 communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues.

More info about the history and all activities related to Earth Day can be found in the following link:

Today; April 22nd, 2016 we are entering the 46th year of this movement.
What our Team does at Elias Beach Hotel …

As a symbolic action in our hotel, we have decided to support this movement, by bringing AWARENESS about our ENVIRONMENTAL and SUSTAINABILITY efforts and actions and how WE CARE FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT, through information in a number of our hotel areas, especially beside the lifts, within the rooms themselves and through a board near our indoor Kids Club.

One of our main initiatives, which we are very delighted to present to you, with today’s occasion of Earth Day, is our Environmental Corner, on our lower Hotel Lobby area, near our Kids Club.

Together with the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CY.CE.RE) we have agreed to begin a cooperation on an annual basis, and bring awareness towards various activities for our island; Cyprus and its environmental aspects.

Following this initiative, we have proceeded to the following actions:

Creation of an Environmental Board

During this action, we have created an Environmental Green Board, with the name: “We care for our Environment”, where we have placed a lot of useful scientific information and details for the major environmental aspects related to our island; Cyprus, that would be of interest to our guests, visitors and team members.

Among these, we included the following information:

– The Flora of Cyprus

– The Fauna of Cyprus

– General information for the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research & Education (CY.CE.RE) – see more for CY.CE.RE history and activities in the following link:

– Wetlands of Cyprus

– Beaches of Cyprus – Blue Flags

– The Forests of Cyprus

– Herbs of Cyprus

– Hotel’s Garden Plants

Scientific identification and recognition of 20 main plants of our hotel gardens, from the Scientific/Research Team of CY.CE.RE.

During the above action, we walked along our hotel gardens with our gardeners and members of CY.CE.RE, took photographs of our 20 main plants, and then proceeded with their presentation on our Environmental Board, with their name and a brief explanation of their origin.

Bronze Metal – We Protect the Environment 2015-2016

We were awarded with the above metal from CY.CE.RE, as protectors of the environment for the year 2015-2016.

For more details of our above green activities, you can visit our Facebook page link:

Further activities are due to happen in the future for the upgrade of our Environmental Corner, as well as the awareness and sensitivity towards our Sustainability & Environmental efforts.

Stay tuned with us for more of our Green Activities…
All together we can change the WORLD we live in! All together we can SAVE our PLANET!
