September 2018 Wine and Food Festivals Not to be Missed in Cyprus

Vacationing in Cyprus in September? Peel yourselves away from the sunbeds, slip on a pair of comfy walking shoes, and rent a car for a day as you take roads less travelled that weave through the shimmering slopes of the Troodos mountains, up towards villages famed for local produce with celebrations to boot. And if you don’t fancy veering off the beaten track, there’s still plenty of festival fun to be had in more central seafront spots within easy reach from Kanika Hotels and Resorts. Read on and take your pick!

1. Limassol Wine Festival

Oh wine, glorious wine! With Cyprus boasting a wine producing history that dates back to 800 BC, Limassol is mighty proud of all the wineries that call the district their home, many located in the blissful villages of the area. As such, it’s hardly surprising that this buzzing seaside hub hosts a festival dedicated to glorious grape produce since 1961. A major cultural event and real focal point for Limassolians year after year, you can expect to satiate your taste buds with plenty of local wine straight from the barrel, accompanied by music and theatrical performances, as well as relevant exhibits.

2. 2^nd Miliou Orange Festival, Paphos district

For the second year running, the bucolic village of Miliou will be luring crowds from near and far to delight in the local orange. Visitors will learn everything they need to know about the tangy fruit, with food and drinks stalls offering local products made from oranges including liquors, marmalades and more. There will also be plenty of fresh juice on offer to quench your thirst, while kleftiko (slow cooked lamb) will be satiating your taste buds once the hunger pangs kick in. With all the action centred around the central village square, you can also enjoy song and dance by the ‘Ktima’ folk group.

3. Grape Festival, Arsos & Koilani, Limassol district

Come September, the wine-growing villages of the island delight in food, dance and…plenty of drink to celebrate the end of the grape harvest! This year, activities will be taking place in Arsos and Koilani; all proud of a long and fruitful wine producing heritage. The village housewives are famed for their culinary skills, preparing delectable sweet treats from wine including ‘palouzes’ (a type of grape jelly) and ‘soujouko’ (nuts dipped in grape jelly and hung on a string). Guests at the upcoming event can tuck into these delights, enjoy plenty of wine tasting, a revival of old traditional customs, as well as folk music and dances.

When you’re in the area, be sure to put your best foot forward to make the most of the countryside covered in rambling vines. Once you’ve enjoyed the fresh air on foot, take a drive and follow the wine routes mapped out by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation – particularly Wine Routes no. 3 (Diarizos Valley – Paphos Region) and no. 4 (Limassol wine route).
