Top Tips on How to Decorate your Dream Wedding

Kanika Hotels and Resorts - April 9, 2019

If you’ve chosen to jet abroad to tie the knot by the blissful palm-fringed Cyprus coastline, you’re already one step away from experiencing your dream wedding. And no doubt, as you gear yourselves up for the big day, you’ll be spending a fair amount of time thinking about how to decorate the venue to make your special day as memorable and impressive as possible. Here at Kanika Hotels & Resorts, our dedicated wedding coordinators are on hand to help you every step of the way with meticulous care and attention. But you may want to consider a few of our handy tips before you draw up the final plan!

  1. Make sure the décor blends in with the setting & wedding theme

If you’ve chosen an outdoor location right by the water’s edge, like the stunning Elias Beach Hotel Limassol, then you may be inclined to go for a Mediterranean style theme, with blue hues and white details. If, however, you’re going to be tying the knot in the  lush gardens of the Olympic Lagoon Resort Agia Napa, then a tropical theme with splashes of vibrant green and yellow could be just the thing to add the wow factor to your special occasion. At the brand new Amavi couples-only hotel, you may want to celebrate intimacy and togetherness in chic minimal style. Once you know what your main theme will be, everything else, including the invites, cakes, and everything else in between, can tie into this.

  1. Consider the guest experience

Dreamy décor may be all well and good, but you’ll also want to be a little practical. The guest seating arrangement will need to be clearly printed and displayed near the entrance of your dinner reception, while the place cards on the tables will need to be equally efficient to make it easy for the guests. It certainly doesn’t mean you can’t be creative however, as there are all sorts of fonts and fun designs you can use to really jazz up the special occasion.

wedding names

  1. Don’t be afraid to set a clear-cut budget

You may dream of thousands of flowers adorning the area where you’ll be saying ‘I do’, but you don’t want to set your mind on something that may not be affordable for you. The best thing that you can do is sit down to discuss an approximate budget with your other half, that will give your allocated wedding planner the opportunity to suggest what’s available in the given price range.

  1. Create lifelong memories with your décor

You’ll never forget the day that you get married, but you can go the extra mile and create life-long memories with the decoration that you choose. A unique board where guests can pin Polaroid photos from the wedding day always works a treat, or you can create a Polaroid guest book. And what about taking your beloved guests down memory lane? You may want to pay tribute to your closest friends and family members, by placing photos of them in an artistic collage!

  1. Outstanding wedding venues

Saying ‘I do’ by the deep blue of the Med is magical, but when you tie the knot at one of the Amavi venues, it’s set to be absolutely heavenly. Head up with your loved one to exchange your vows on the Immenso Celestial Terrace and you can enjoy panoramic views as infinite as your love. Offering complete privacy, this intimate venue is suitable for up to 18 guests. If you’ve invited more guests to join you on your special day, the Selene Terrace caters to 35 guests and is a picture-perfect setting combining views over the landscaped gardens with a vista of azure seascapes.

Dreaming of the most magical cocktail reception and dinner?  The Selene Bar & Terrace is the perfect place for a glittering reception, merging sophisticated modern décor with timeless views of the Mediterranean. Once night sets in, and the twinkle of stars light up the dark skies, wedding guests can tuck into culinary delights either at the Immenso Terrace or Fortolana.  While there is a fee for private venue hire, for those who prefer non-private dining, the main Ezaria restaurant offers is ideal.

  1. Dreamy couples’ accommodation

Your actual wedding day is exceptionally important, but where you retire for the night with your other half is also highly significant. After all, you want the days and nights spent in the hotel, both before and after your wedding, to be as magical and romantic as possible!

With this in mind, the Amavi offers lavish luxury with the special Honeymoon Suites specially designed for couples celebrating the most precious occasion of their lives. The suites are defined by extra space and thoughtful details, spanning 36 square metres, and including a private balcony with gorgeous views. The spacious rooms also boast romantic lighting, separate walk-in showers, and all sorts of comforts and amenities to make your new life together as relaxed as can be.

  1. All-round holiday perfection for guests

With a wide choice of stylish accommodation, everyone is guaranteed a blissfully sun-kissed holiday experience by the luxury pools and lush gardens, complemented by fine Michelin class dining with half board premium gastronomy to delight even the most discerning gourmand, and side-by-side spa journeys of complete relaxation, wellness and beauty.

  1. A location to remember for a lifetime

Add to that enchanting sunset views and the captivating site of the Medieval Paphos Castle and scenic harbour, and your stay is set to be forever etched in your memory. Walk all the way down to the harbour-side and enjoy an inspiring stroll arm-in-arm with your beloved, as fiery sunsets light up the evening skies in colours that defy description.

Kanika Hotels and Resorts - December 18, 2018

Cyprus may be warmer than most European countries come December, but that doesn’t mean that Christmas isn’t a gloriously festive occasion, with the whole island coming to life with the magical twinkle of fairy lights, while colourful markets and fairground attractions make for truly fabulous days and nights out. And when it comes to stays in festive fashion, Kanika Hotels and Resorts pull out all the stops to ensure a festive season that’s as memorable as can be. What can you most look forward to? Here’s an overview of what’s being prepared and planned to accentuate the holiday season cheer at the glorious Olympic Lagoon Resort and Alexander the Great Beach Hotel Paphos, as well as the Elias Beach Hotel in Limassol.

  1. Festive dining

It certainly wouldn’t be Christmas or New Year without a festive feast and the talented chefs at Kanika Hotels & Resorts let on that they’ll be cooking up a storm for all guests this holiday season! Group Executive Chef, Antonis Nicolaou, is super excited about the gastronomic atmosphere that everyone can enjoy in December and the start of January.

festive dining

With sumptuous gala dinners for foodies to dig into, as well as a variety of Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day buffets, all the festive favourites will be given a real creative twist with a wide array of platters and salads, hot items, and endless dessert choices.  “Our guests will taste special gastronomic delights from both Cyprus and abroad, with contemporary fine dining touches, especially at our gala dinners,” says Nicolaou. “It’s all about unique ingredients, with an emphasis on quality and presentation.”

To add to the festive glee, gastronomes can also enjoy cooking workshops and demos, champagne breakfasts, and other interactive food events to bring on the holiday cheer.

  1. Sparkling events

Excitement reaches an all-time high at Christmas-time when heaps of events give guests good reason to rejoice, no matter what your age! Whether you love getting creative, have a soft a spot for music, or can’t wait to get sporty, there is something for everyone. The list of events to enjoy at each hotel over the festive period are endless, be it arts and crafts, dancing, performances, kids’ discos, quizzes, movie magic, cookery and cocktail demonstrations.

Christmas events

“One of the things I love the most about the events are the regular guests who come along to enjoy them every year,” enthuses Evgenia Papadopoulou, Guest Relations Manager at Elias Beach Hotel.  “Doing this job for over 8 years now, I know so many people personally, we’ve all become friends, and one big family! So that gives all of our events a really personal touch and it feels lovely to see the same happy faces.”

Your Definitive Summer Holiday Packing List: What not to Forget!

Packing before your holidays is often exciting, but it can sometimes be a slightly stressful affair! What to make sure goes into your suitcase for your Cyprus break? And what to leave out? We at Kanika Hotels & Resorts  are here to guide you through your sizzling summer holiday packing list.

  1. Sunscreen

If you’re travelling to Cyprus for your summer holidays from a country with a cooler climate, you’ll no doubt want to stretch out onto the sunbed by the glistening poolside the moment you arrive on the hotel grounds. But be warned, the sun’s glare is very strong throughout the summer, and you should wear adequate broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. Look for an SPF 30 or higher; it will help prevent skin cancer, premature ageing and sunspots. Most importantly, you don’t want to burn. You may want to show off your lovely glowing holiday tan but building it up gradually is key.

  1. Wide brimmed hat

It goes without saying that just slapping on the sunscreen isn’t enough. Because if you sit out in the sun, you’ll also want to be sure to prevent sunstroke. Ladies can invest in a stylish wide-brimmed hat, while the gentlemen can look cool under blue skies with a cowboy hat or straw trilby. Just choose something that adds a funky flair to your holiday wardrobe!

 wide brimmed hat

  1. Trusty sunnies

The last thing you want to be doing throughout your holiday is squinting! So before you head off on your trip, be sure to invest in a good pair of sunglasses. In order to minimise glare, polarised lenses are best, reducing reflections, improving contrast, and visual clarity. Always look for a labelled good quality lens and for sunglasses that meet the European safety standards. And once you’ve checked the practicalities, be as daring as you like with the style you go for, whether you’re a fan of trendy oversized aviators or square wayfarers.

  1. Comfy open shoes

Forget about socks in Cyprus, all you need is a pair of comfy open sandals, as well as a pair of flipflops for walks by the beach and splashing poolside fun. If you do plan on heading out on day trips to explore the stunning natural beauty of the island, then invest in a sturdy pair of hiking sandals – they may not look super trendy, but your feet will thank you once you head out for a walk-through roads less travelled.

Flip flops by pool

  1. Chic scarf or shawl

Summer holidays in Cyprus are bound to be hot, but saying that, evenings by the sea can be breezy, and it’s a great idea to pack a light scarf or shawl to just throw over your shoulders, should the need arise. What’s more, a colourful scarf doubles up as a great headpiece, especially when you want to hide the summer frizz!

Why Dedicated ‘Couple Time’ on Holiday will Boost your Relationship

These days, we all lead exceptionally fast-paced lives. One minute we’re dashing about for work meetings, and the next, we’re answering calls, rushing to grab a bite to eat, running errands, collecting the kids from school, and the list goes on. At the end of the day, we’re lucky enough to enjoy a little downtime on the sofa before it all begins again. And very often, we just zone out in front of the television or spend time browsing on our phone or iPad!

Unfortunately, however, somewhere along the lines, quality time with our other half gets pushed aside. Breaking away from the daily stress cycle is key, and when you feel the need to reconnect with your partner, nothing beats a tête-à-tête romantic holiday. Why is it so important? Here are a few key reasons worth considering!

  1. Carving out space just for each other

When you pack your bags to embark on a holiday with your loved one, you will immediately be setting aside space and time just for yourselves. And this is special in itself, because it’s so rare to have more than a few hours together at the end of a busy day during daily life. Date nights are important, but totally changing environment and looking forward to a holiday together is even more exciting.

  1. Creating new experiences together

Remember the first time you and your partner watched the sunrise or sunset together? Or the first time you went out for romantic dinner at your favourite restaurant? Relationships thrive on novel experiences, and you’ll be looking back at the new memories you create for a long time to come, as you re-ignite the love you feel and strengthen the bond between you in new ways.

  1. Appreciating time away without other disturbances

How many times have you sat down for dinner with your other half or tried to watch a film together and something has happened to disturb the peace? Going away with your loved one gives you the chance to set that ‘out of office’ email, let the wider family know that you’ll be away for a while, make babysitting arrangements if you have kids, and set off to enjoy uninterrupted romance.

Habits to pick up on your next holiday

They say that “old habits” die hard. We believe that when our mind is clear and we are on holiday we can implement new habits more easily and keep them. We would like to share with you six positive habits that you can pick up the next time you go on holiday.

If you are visiting us, here at Kanika Hotels & Resorts you will find a lot of benefits and you will find it easier to keep your new habits.

  1. Be in the moment

We start each week running around, going to work, visiting family, maybe taking the kids to school and facing every day challenges. A lot of the time we are not living in the moment; we are thinking of what will happen tomorrow or what happened yesterday. Experts estimate that our mind thinks between 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts a day. That’s an average of 2,500 – 3,300 thoughts per hour. That’s incredible. Some other experts estimate a smaller number, around 50,000 thoughts per day, which means it’s 2,100 thoughts per hour! That is just mind-blowing.

How on earth can we be present if we have 2,100 thoughts per hour? Well it all comes down to training our mind to be present, to live in the moment. It’s like driving; we get better at it with more practice. The mind is the same; it needs constant training. There is a great book on living in the moment that you can read; The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.

Sometimes when you talk with other people, don’t you feel that they are not present?  We all do it at some point. The reason why we are not present is because we are thinking about a future event or something that happened in the past and we are not in the moment. A lot of the time we are not actually listening to the other person, we are just waiting for them to finish talking so we can reply with what we think.

The next time you are on holiday practice enjoying the Mediterranean Sea, the beautiful sand, the blue sky, the hotel room you are in, there are literally a million things that you can focus on to be present. You will start living in the moment with your loved ones.

  1. Reading

When we were children we used to read books because our teachers and parents told us that we need to read; it was a must. Once we got our degrees we started neglecting reading books because…well you know, we don’t have time. Well there are hundreds of proven studies which show that reading a printed book has a lot of benefits.

There is nothing like the smell of an old book or the crack of a new one’s spine.

Dr. Seuss once wrote “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Reading a good book opens up a whole world of knowledge starting from a very young age. Exposure to new vocabulary not only leads to higher scores on reading tests, but also higher scores on general tests of intelligence. Plus, stronger early reading skills may mean higher intelligence later in life. Here’s a tip: choose a traditional printed book, Kindles and iPads are cool but research suggests that reading on a screen can slow you down by as much as 20 to 30 percent.

Reading makes you more intelligent, more empathetic, it helps you fight Alzheimer’s disease, it helps you relax and reading can help you to achieve better sleep.

The next time you fly to Cyprus and visit one of our resorts, get a nice book from the airport bookstore and enjoy reading in the sun. Once you get into a habit of reading at least 30 minutes a day on your holiday you are more likely to keep reading when you get back home.

  1. Exercise (walking or running)

Once you finish reading in the morning you can go for a walk. Here in Cyprus we have lovely beaches that you can enjoy. Outside Alexander The Great Hotel in Paphos there is an amazing side-road where you can walk for 30 minutes and enjoy the Mediterranean Breeze.

Running is one of the best butt-kicking, calorie-blasting workouts around. You can run anywhere. Whenever you choose to run on a treadmill, by the beach or in the street, it’s easy to get those miles in. When you run you can explore new places; on your holiday take your sneakers with you. You don’t need to think about pricey gym membership, you can start running with the right shoes.

If you pick up this new habit you will have a new excuse to eat more carbs; more spaghetti. During intense training you will need to increase your carb intake and it will help you boost your performance and boost your mood during hard runs.

You will live longer because runners have fewer disabilities and remain active longer than their sedentary counterparts.

You need a great app to keep track of your running, you can download an awesome app that tracks everything and keeps you motivated, it’s available on iOS and Android: Nike+ Run Club.

  1. Be more you.

The world is shouting at us not to be ourselves, all the adverts are telling us how we should dress and how we should live our life. We spend so much of our emotional energy on worrying about what others think of us and we all try to be accepted by society.  Practice being more you; wear what makes you happy, what makes you feel comfortable, what you absolutely love.

When we are ourselves we have more energy, we love ourselves and people around us more. When we try to fit into this world, we are not us. We are not ourselves. While you are enjoying one of our cocktails you can think about the things you like about yourself and really appreciate the fact that you are alive, that you are here.

Being ourselves is the best thing we can all do. This is one of the best habits you can pick up on your next holiday. Come back fresh, a brand new you.

There is a lot of information that says that we need 21 days to form a new habit, which is not really true. Jeremy Dean, a psychologist and author explains that after he conducted some research it showed that some habits can take around 254 days to form and some 84 days. However, the 21 days research is probably right if all you want to do is drink a glass of water after breakfast. Anything harder is likely to take longer to become a really strong habit, and in, the case of some activities, much longer.

We believe if you want to pick up a habit, you need to try and commit to your new habit. Here at Kanika Hotels and Resorts we have everything you need to help you start your new habit.

There you have it, five habits that you can pick up the next time you go on holiday. If you are thinking of booking a holiday, you can choose any of our hotels and retreats here in Cyprus. In the meantime, we would like to read your comments on what habits would you like to pick up on your next holiday, write in the comment section below.

How We Make Cocktails at Kanika

Kanika Hotels and Resorts - January 8, 2018

Have you ever asked yourself “what is a cocktail? What does this word mean?” The actual answer is the word “cocktail” was first defined in 1806 by The Balance and Columbian Repository of Hudson, New York as “a stimulating liquor composed of any kind of sugar, water and bitters, vulgarly called a bittered sling.”

The first time the word “cocktail” is recorded as being used in the U.S. was on April 28, 1803 in a publication called The Farmers’ Cabinet and in the UK there is a reference to the “cock-tail” even earlier in The Morning Post and Gazetteer in London, England on March 20, 1798.

We decided to share with you how we make our cocktails at Kanika Hotels. We went to Alexander the Great Hotel in Paphos and asked our barmen to share with you our secrets. Our barmen are well known for their passion in making refreshing and awesome cocktails. From hundreds of cocktails we picked five cocktails that we absolutely love:

  1. Hugo is a huge hit in Europe and in North America this year. This cocktail is a real hit for people who love wine and people who are still on the fence about it. To make this cocktail we use:
  2. Elderflower Syrup
  3. Mint Leaf
  4. Lots of Ice
  5. Top with Prosecco

There you have it, enjoy a refreshing Hugo Cocktail with a Mediterranean Sea breeze.

  1. Mai Tai cocktail is claimed by Victor J. Bergenron. Vic’s story of its invention is that he created it one afternoon for some friends who were visiting from Tahiti. One of his friends, Carrie Guild, tasted it and shouted: “Maita I roa ae!” (literally “very good”, figuratively “Out of this world! The best!” – hence the name.

Here’s how we make Mai Tai here at Kanika;

  1. Bacardi White
  2. Dark Rum
  3. Apricot Brandy
  4. Almond Syrup
  5. Lime juice

Dark rum with Apricot brandy makes the taste unique. Enjoy a Mai Tai while you enjoy your view.

  1. Pimm’s No 1 cocktail is a favourite British Lemonade. Pimm, a farmer’s son from Kent, became the owner of an oyster bar in the City of London. He offered the tonic (a gin-based drink containing a secret mixture of herbs and liqueurs) as an aid to digestion, serving it in a small tankard known as a “No.1 Cup”, hence its subsequent name.

Here is how we make our special cocktail:

  1. Pimms
  2. Sprite
  3. Cucumber
  4. Orange

Why on earth would you add a cucumber to a drink? Well, you will be surprised that cucumber goes very well with Pimms, for some weird reason it tastes delicious! While you let this idea soak in let’s see try a cocktail that is full of love.

  1. Sparkling love cocktail says it all. If you are in love or want to be in love this is the cocktail to order! It’s a very light drink that is suitable for a lovely night out with your loved one.

The cocktail is made from the following:

  1. Sparkling Wine (Prosecco)
  2. Strawberry Puree
  3. Cranberry Juice

Here you have it, a light and sparkling cocktail. Strawberry puree makes the cocktail more elegant to drink. Let’s share with you our last but definitely not least cocktail.

  1. Red Is Hot is a Cypriot local cocktail. The reason why it’s hot is because the cocktail contains Zivania. It’s a Cypriot pomace brandy produced from a mixture of grape pomace and local dry wines made from Xynisteri and Mavro grapes.

The cocktail consists of the following:

  1. Zivania
  2. Strawberry Puree
  3. Forest Fruit – Berries
  4. Ginger Ale

This is the Red Is Hot cocktail, for those of you that want something much stronger than the Hugo, this is the perfect cocktail for you.
